The Explorer is one of the most anticipated models for the next year, as it is about to come completely new. The last we saw a redesign of this model was in 2011. For that occasion, we saw a lot of significant changes, such as the switch to a modern unibody platform. The upcoming redesign will bring radical changes as well. We are about to see a new layout, as well as significant growth in size. Of course, we count on other novelties as well, on those modes typical for redesigns. This includes new styling, powertrain, etc. The 2021 Ford Explorer will come only a year after this redesign. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see some interesting novelties.
- Spacious cabin
- Wide engine offer
- Two hybrid powertrains
- Lots of standard equipment
- Tough competition
- High starting price compared to rivals
The upcoming redesign is bringing a lot of novelties and we have no doubt that all of them will carry on in the 2021 Ford Explorer as well. Probably the most important change of this overhaul is a new platform. The new model will ride on the company’s new architecture, codenamed CD6. It will be used for future large cars and its most important feature is the RWD layout. This is a pretty important change, as the current model features front-wheel drive. Of course, AWD will be in the offer as well. In any case, this promises a more interesting driving experience for sure.
Another important change is in terms of size. The new model will be notably bigger than the outgoing model. It will get more than six inches in wheelbase and also feature longer overall length. This clearly indicates that the new Explorer is aiming to drivers that are considering models like Chevy Traverse, which stands somewhere between mid- and full-size segments, with generous legroom in all three rows of seats.
2021 Ford Explorer Styling
Of course, this redesign will bring novelties in terms of aesthetics and the 2021 Ford Explorer will follow all these changes. While the overall shape is about to keep familiar shape, just in a bigger package, we count on a completely new front face. Of course, it will be based on the company’s newest design lanugage. This means more prominent grille design, as well as new headlights and many more parts. On the other side, the rear end won’t change that much, so cound on relatively familiar design solutions.
For the 2021 Ford Explorer, we could see a couple of minor updates, such as new color options and similar things.

2021 Ford Explorer Engines
Count on two gasoline engines in the offer for the 2021 Ford Explorer. Base models should feature a familiar 2.3-liter turbo inline-four engine, which is good for about 285 horsepower but could come with a slight power boost with this occasion. Higher trims should come with a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder unit, which is expected to feature a max output of around 400 horsepower. Also, count on a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
How about hybrid powertrain?
Electrified versions of the new crossover probably won’t be ready for the initial launch, so they should debut with the 2021 Ford Explorer. At this point, we are still waiting for more precise details, but it looks pretty certain that the new model will come with both conventional and plug-in hybrid powertrain. The former will probably be based on an older-generation 3.3-liter V6 engine, while the latter one should feature a couple of electric motors combined with a new twin-turbo engine.
2021 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price
We expect to see the 2021 Ford Explorer sometime in the last quarter of the next year. At this point, details about the price are still unavailable, though we believe it won’t deviate too much from the current model which starts at around $32,500.
